March 2018 Happenings at Bear Creek Services

Earlier this month, dozens of disability services organizations from around Minnesota visited St. Paul for a rally at the Capital Rotunda.  After the rally ended, 60+ people from Olmsted County visited our state Senators and House members from SE Minnesota.  We met with 5 out of 6 in person -- Representatives Duane Quam, Duane Sauke, Nels Pierson, Tina Liebling, and State Senator Carla Nelson.   We talked to State Senator Dave Senjem via phone.

Here is what we discussed:

There is a real chance that disability service organizations in Minnesota will experience a 7% rate cut this summer.  We need to advocate as much as possible to stop these cuts from happening.

In order to avoid the cut, there are two bills that need to pass the legislature and get signed by the Governor before the end of May:

  1. HF3191  (House File)
  2. SF2889  (Senate File)

If the bills are not passed, the cut would be devastating.  The cut would severely hamper our ability to provide the necessary support services for people who have special needs in the community.  The legislators heard real life stories of disability service recipients, and staff members, who are all struggling right now.  It was emotional and real.  Carla Nelson and Tina Liebling agreed to sign on as co-authors for the bills on the spot!!!  Those were huge wins!!!

But we need ALL legislators to publicly support --- and also to publicly advocate for ---- these bills getting passed.   We need your help to make sure the message stays front and center.

We need you to contact your representatives in the very near future.   Your message needs to be simple:  “Please do whatever is possible to help stop the 7% cut.  We need your vote --- and we also need you to advocate to other state legislators about its importance!”

Please let me know if you are willing to send an email, or make a phone call.  It will only take a few minutes, and it can make a big difference.

The link below shows you who your legislators are, and it also provides a link that provides email and phone contact information for each legislator.

We appreciate your support with this important legislation!
