Summer is finally here and it is beautiful outside. It is a perfect time to get out and be a part of the neighborhood. One of our values states that we value the neighborhoods we live in and strive to be valued members of those neighborhoods.
In this culture of busy living, the neighborhood looks different than it did when I was growing up. Everyone knew their neighbor and watched out for one another. Cookies were baked and ice pops were shared. We believe that getting to know our neighbors is important for those we support. It creates community, something we all strive for. And it also creates safety.
Statistics show that individuals with disabilities are safer when they are known in their communities. Individuals who are isolated are at greater risk for abuse and exploitation. So, let’s get out and meet the neighbors! We have a perfect opportunity coming up in August.
Tuesday, August 2nd, is the day for “National Night Out”. A national initiative to create safety in our communities by getting to know our neighbors. Last year 41,800 people participated in Rochester (3rd highest in the nation). This year’s goal is 50,000. Let’s be part of those 50,000 people.
If your neighborhood already does a national night out event, please, make plans to attend with those we support. And if they do not, please call Pam at the office (288-7195) to help host an event. This is going to be great!!!
